Belmont Hill Football Team Downs Wilbraham & Monson to Capture 2016 New England Championship

11/19/2016

In the first quarter of the first game of the season, Belmont Hill found itself trailing New Hampton 18-0.  After the previous season's disappointing finish, it was an alarming start to the new season. But the team maintained its composure and shut down New Hampton the rest of the way to earn a decisive 43-18 victory.

That game started the momentum for a 6-2 regular season, with the team finishing as co-champions of the ISL. Matched against Wilbraham & Monson Academy, who finished the regular season at 7-1, the team would play arguably its best game of the year. Led by quarterback Zach Geddes, who ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns, and passed for 120 yards, the team never trailed in the game, and answered every rally their opponents could muster. Two first-quarter touchdowns on runs by Isaiah Collins and Jaylen Bailey got the boys off to a 14-0 start, and an eventual 14-3 halftime lead.

In the second half, a Zach Geddes touchdown run was answered by a W&M touchdown (missed conversion) that brought the score to 21-9 at the end of three quarters. This set the stage for a wild final quarter. Geddes connected with Jake Bobo for a 60-yard strike that opened the lead to 28-9, but W&M quickly answered. A 12-yard run by Geddes put the lead at 35-16. W&M would put another touchdown on the board to make it 35-23. But Ray Hunt ended any hope of a miracle comeback for W&M, as he charged in from two yards out in the waning seconds to secure the 41-23 winning margin.

All in all a great season for a team that overcame so much and never looked back.
