May 28, 2018 With an impressive 16-7 victory over Groton on Friday, May 25, the St. Mark's Girls' Varsity Lacrosse team capped a 15-2 regular season and earned a share of the 2018 Independent School League (ISL) championship. This was the Lions' third ISL title in four seasons, all under head coach Channing Warner. Three VI Formers—Lillian Stout, Caroline Peterson, and Grace Sambrook—were part of that four-year run (SM went 56-14 during that stretch), while classmates Lizzie Provost, Brynn Kennedy, Marlee Paterson, and Danielle Peterson rounded out a senior class which was the core of this year's championship team. "This graduating VI Form lacrosse class is a very athletic, competitive, and dedicated group of young women," declares Coach Warner. "They got faster and more talented every year through hard work and commitment to our team, regardless of whether or not lacrosse was their 'main sport.' In fact, only one of our seven seniors is going on to play lacrosse in college (others are pursuing field hockey or ice hockey). As for the rest of the team this season, they shared a passion for the sport of lacrosse and a joy for playing together. There were lots of tears after our last game as people said their goodbyes to those who were moving on from St. Mark's. It was a real testament to the close connections we all have built over the seasons, and a testament to the power of sports in bringing people together." A boarding student from Wareham, MA, Lillian Stout '18 was named a First Team All-ISL selection in both her IV and V Form seasons, and was MVP of last year's squad. She ends her St. Mark's career with 171 goals and 250 points, both good for second place all-time at the School, behind Tess D'Orsi '16. D'Orsi is currently one of the top scorers for Princeton University's women's varsity lacrosse team, as she already has more than 100 total points in just her first two years as a college athlete.' This was head coach Channing Warner's fifth season at the helm of the St. Mark's Lions. During that time she has posted an overall record of 72-16. Both her 72 victories and .809 winning percentage are good for second best all-time at St. Mark's. Her teams have always been powerful offensively, averaging 12.7 goals per game during her first five seasons in Southborough. This spring, her team had the most effective defense in the history of the program at St. Mark's, allowing just 6.5 goals per game. The 2018 St. Mark's Girls' Varsity Lacrosse team posted a record of 11-1 in ISL competition, and this year shares the title with Middlesex. |
