NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONS: St. Mark's Field Hockey Takes NEPSAC Title for Second Straight Year

Posted: November 18, 2013

With a thrilling 4-1 victory over Cushing Academy played at Choate-Rosemary Hall this past Sunday, the St. Mark’s Varsity Field Hockey team claimed the New England Class B championship for the second consecutive year.

Posting a 14-1 regular season record (and the ISL title), the St. Mark’s team began its playoff run with a 7-1 win over Rye Country Day School at Pomfret on Wednesday, November 13. On Saturday, November 16, St. Mark’s hosted Williston-Northampton, and defeated them 3-1.

Then it was Sunday versus Cushing. The scrappy Cushing team, a #5 seed in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC) tournament had upset #1 seed (and ISL co-champion) Middlesex 1-0 only the day before. The NEPSAC final game was a hard-fought contest, but St. Mark’s emerged the winner to claim its second straight N.E. title.

Leading the season-long effort for St. Mark’s was ISL MVP Alexa Mackintire ’14, who had more than 20 goals and 20 assists in just 18 games. But the championship drive was a genuine team effort, with Mackintire’s classmates Ally Skelly and Sophia Millerick, along with Fifth Formers Maddie Torgerson and Claudia Deeley, and Fourth Former Kara Finnerty also earning All-ISL recognition, and a host of other fine players all contributing to St. Mark’s success. In Coach Channing Weymouth’s debut season, the St. Mark’s players demonstrated that last year was absolutely no fluke. In fact, this is St. Mark’s fourth post-season appearance since 2009.
