Azar Swain Named 2016-17 Gatorade Massachusetts Boys Basketball Player of the Year
CHICAGO (March 20, 2017) — In its 32nd year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, today announced Azar Swain of The Rivers School as its 2016-17 Gatorade Massachusetts Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Swain is the first Gatorade Massachusetts Boys Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from The Rivers School.

Brooks School Boys basketball Wins Second Consecutive NEPSAC Tournament

“Calm, collected confidence,” is how Brooks School’s boys 1st basketball coach John McVeigh described his team’s mindset going into the finals of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council’s winter tournament on Sunday evening. The attitude served them well.
 
After besting fifth-seeded Rivers School 73-49 on Saturday at home, the top-seed squad took down sixth-seeded Marianapolis Preparatory 68-32 at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. the next day, making them Class B NEPSAC champions once again!

Marcos Echevarria ’15 of St. Mark's Reaches 1000-Point Plateau

Congratulations to Marcos Echevarria ’15. With his first shot in Saturday’s boys’ varsity basketball game against St. George’s—a three-pointer barely half-a-minute into the contest—he passed the 1000-point mark on his St. Mark’s career.

Action stopped immediately, as Echevarria took congratulations from his teammates and coaches Brian Burbank ’07 and Sal Abdo ’07. Athletic Director John Levandowski then presented the Sixth Former from Peabody, MA with a special basketball commemorating the event.

St. Mark’s Alumnus Brian Burbank ’07 Named Head Coach of St. Mark's Varsity Boys' Basketball

St. Mark’s alumnus Brian Burbank ’07 has been named the new head coach of the School’s successful Boys’ Varsity Basketball program.

A veteran of longtime head coach David Lubick’s powerhouse St. Mark’s teams in 2006 and 2007, Burbank was team captain as a Sixth Former. A talented pressure defender, Brian Burbank was part of the historic undefeated 27-0 St. Mark’s team as a Fifth Former, which took both the ISL crown and the NEPSAC championship. During his two years on the varsity, St. Mark’s went 50-7 on the basketball court. As a Sixth Former, Brian received the team’s Most Improved award.

St. Mark’s Alumnus Nik Stauskas ’12 Named Big 10 Player of the Year; Five St. Markers See NCAA Post Season Action

Congratulations to St. Mark’s alumnus Nik Stauskas ’12, who was recently named the 2014 Big 10 Player of the Year. Also congratulations to the five St. Mark’s alumni who saw NCAA Division I post-season basketball action this March.

A sophomore at the University of Michigan, Stauskas led the Wolverines in scoring (17.4 points per game, good for third in the Conference), assists (113), free throw percentage (.822), and three-point shooting percentage (.451, in the top ten nationally). He was also named as a First Team All-American selection by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and he is one of 15 finalists on the ballot for this year’s Wooden Award, for the College Basketball Player of the Year. Stauskas has helped to lead Michigan to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen for the second consecutive year (during his freshman campaign, the Wolverines went all the way to the championship game). This Friday evening (March 28), the number two-seeded Michigan (now 27-8) will play 11th seed Tennessee (on CBS at 7:15 PM).

Roxbury Latin's Benzan: McDonald’s All-American Nominee
Patrick Benzan of Roxbury Latin was one two ISL players to be nominated and among 9 Massachusetts players to be nominated. He is Roxbury Latin’s second ever McDonald’s All-American nominee (Remy Cofield 2007). Patrick is also the school’s all-time scoring leader with 1,833 points and over 500 assists.
 
 
Roxbury Latin's Benzan Becomes School's All-Time Leading Scorer

Patrick Benzan – a senior captain for Roxbury Latin – recently broke the school’s all-time scoring record of 1,549 points. Patrick scored 36 points in  an 83-80 loss to Middlesex on Wednesday, and in doing so, now holds the school’s all-time record with 1,564 points.  Patrick also holds the school career record for assists with over 400.
